All About Us

MaxEquations is an artisan collective producing creative clothing from organically grown fabrics and other environmentally friendly fabrics. It begun in 2001 as Blue Fish Clothing closed it's doors and almost the entire team, even now almost 10 years later consists of ex Blue Fish employees . Owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Eve and Gary Zavodnick. MaxEquations is a "cottage industry" as all members of the company operate out of their own home studios.

Eve, a long time sales and customer service professional is now returning to her creative roots by designing the MaxEquations line of clothing. She was previously the Customer Service Manager and Wholesale Sales Representative of Blue Fish Clothing. Her education is in both in fine arts and the theatre with a BA from Penn State University.

Gary, whose education includes a BFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in printmaking, has over 25 years in retailing management. He came to Blue Fish as the Director of Retail Sales and Production and later was given Catalog Sales and the Art Department to manage as well. His creative side melds exceptionally well with his business side managing all areas of MaxEquations.

When Blue Fish Clothing closed in the spring of 2001, Gary and Eve started MaxEquations with a strong desire to create a wearable art clothing business that is more responsive to the customer. Together with Linda Snyder, a senior pattern maker from Blue Fish and Brian Metz, one of the most popular painters at Blue Fish; Eve and Gary operate this creative cooperative along with a few part timers that help out in various ways during busy times. We all eagerly anticipate the transformations that we all will experience; both personally and professionally as we learn and grow along with this enriching experience.

All About Our Clothing

"Attention to detail" is the mantra that we speak here at MaxEquations. We concentrate greatly on the overall quality of our products, from our fabrics down to the smallest detail of our sewing. Our company is small which gives us the ability to oversee every aspect of our production. We produce our clothing in a small local factory and individually by our own seamstress and pattern maker. Our garments, of course, begin with the fabrics. We purchase top quality Certified Organic Cottons and other natural fibers. Wherever possible our first choice is fabric "Grown and Sewn in the USA" helping to support many small family owned farms.

We pay particular attention to our consistency of our sizing. There’s nothing more annoying than having to change the size that you order based on inconsistencies from collection to collection. Our sizing is standardized, so if you wear a Medium in one Top, you will wear a Medium in every other Top as well. Our Bust measurements never change, the only differences are in the length and bottom opening measurements as the style dictates. Overpieces, jackets and coats are all sized up as we understand they will b worn over Tops. Similar size standards are found in our other styles; like Pants and Skirts.

We create our garments with attention to the detail of the fabric itself. Careful attention is paid so you’ll never have a garment that just doesn’t lay right on your body. This is called "torque" in the industry, and you know it when you have a garment like that. A torqued garment just never seems to hang on you correctly. Standard sewing features are cover-stitched hems and finished (or edge stitched) seams. Many garments (woven fabrics mostly) feature single needle top stitching throughout, a mark of quality construction.

Top quality notions are used from industrial strength elastics for waistbands that won’t dry rot to strong Cotton threads that will hold throughout multiple washes. We select our buttons from our vast resources of natural Corozo Nut buttons to hand selected Vintage or Handmade Ceramics that will enhance the finished product and we make sure that they are well sewn on.

Many questions are asked of us regarding our use of garment dyes as well as mill dyed fabrics. For most of our collections we use "prepared for garment dye" fabrics, meaning the fabric comes in natural and can be dyed to order in any of our collection colors. Other times we may have the opportunity to use "mill dyed" fabrics. Then rolls of colored fabrics arrive, with which we create outfits. There are advantages of both types of fabrics and we use both as the item (or collection) warrants.

Garment dyeing allows us the opportunity to create our own unique color palettes that complement the season. These garment dyes are commercially prepared and depending on the color, may occasionally bleed. This is actually a good sign of a deeply saturated color and is perfectly normal. This bleeding will not alter your painted image in any way, and will occur evenly over the garment. Please see our Care Instructions for more information about how to care for your garment dyed items.

Mill dyed fabrics are generally more fade resistant (of course, depending on your wash and dry methods) and the colors are consistent across different bolts of fabric. Of course, we are limited to what colors these fabrics are offered in as quantities needed to Mill Dye our own colors are very high. One of the benefits of Mill dyed Fabrics that we do like to use when available is in the Pitch Black color that is more difficult for us to achieve in garment dye. When these Pitch Black fabrics are offered in any of our collections, they are very much worth ordering.

All garments are pre-shrunk so you don’t have to worry about shrinkage. The art if you choose for your garments to be painted is created with long lasting acrylic paints. Please see our Care Instructions for more information on how to wash and dry these items.

We our very proud of our quality standards and all of the attention to the details that make our garments. If you are happy with our products please spread the word and tell a friend. If, for any reason, you are unhappy with anything on your garment, please tell us.
